Day 29: Faith Comes by Hearing
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17 (KJV)
“Faith does not grow by rehearsing the problem; faith grows by hearing, believing, and speaking the promise of God.” — Dr. Daniel LeBlanc
Faith Comes by Hearing
Recently, when my wife was going through a serious health crisis, it was probably one of the most difficult things we had ever walked through. There were times when we had to quote Scripture out loud because the voice of pain and the medical reports were trying to take over our faith. One of the most precious attributes of my wife is that she is no quitter, and even when things looked impossible, she kept standing. Sometimes the most impossible moments are the very moments when faith must rise up because there are few choices left except to believe God and refuse to quit.
There were many voices that tried to speak to us while we were walking through that health challenge. Symptoms have a voice, pain has a voice, medical reports have a voice, fear has a voice, and well-meaning people sometimes have a voice. The enemy will always try to add his voice if we allow him. The question is not whether voices will speak; the question is which voice we will hear the most. Even more than that, the question is which voice we will echo through our own lips.
Romans 10:17 gives us one of the clearest instructions in Scripture concerning faith: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Faith does not come by hearing fear all day. Faith does not come by constantly rehearsing sickness. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God, and the most powerful, lasting faith comes from hearing the Word of God and repeating it with our own lips.
That means what we hear repeatedly has the power to shape what we believe. If we continually listen to fear, fear will grow. If we continually listen to the problem, the problem will become larger in our imagination. If we continually listen to the diagnosis without also hearing the promise, our hearts can become heavy, discouraged, and overwhelmed.
But when we hear the Word of God, faith begins to rise. The Word reminds us that God is good, Jesus is Lord, healing belongs to His children, and the Holy Spirit is working in us. The Word brings our hearts back into agreement with Heaven. It lifts our eyes above the symptoms and reminds us that sickness does not get the final word.
When the Word becomes settled in our hearts, it eventually becomes the confession of our mouths. That is often where we begin to see the first fruits of manifestation. When a heartfelt confession of faith begins coming out of the mouth, the miracle is not far away.
This is why we must be intentional about what we allow into our ears. Just as the body is affected by what we eat, the heart is affected by what we hear. A steady diet of fear will weaken faith, but a steady diet of God’s Word will strengthen it. If God’s Word is medicine, then hearing God’s Word is one way we take that medicine into our heart.
There are times when a person may need to hear the same promise again and again before faith becomes stronger than fear. That is not failure; that is the process of building faith. A doctor may say, “Take this medicine daily,” because consistency matters. In the same way, we must give our ears a daily dose of God’s promises until the Word begins to settle in the heart and come out of the mouth.
I remember how my wife and I would sing songs of promise and quote healing Scriptures every time we received a report. By God’s grace, we consistently and relentlessly spoke promises in the midst of the fiery furnace. We did not pretend the battle was not real, but we refused to let the battle have the loudest voice.
This is also why speaking the Word is so powerful. When you say God’s promise out loud, your own ears hear your voice agreeing with God. You are not merely speaking into the air; you are planting faith in your own heart. Every time you say, “God’s Word is life to me and health to all my flesh,” your ears hear the promise. Every time you say, “By His stripes I am healed,” your heart is reminded of what Jesus has provided.
When your ears hear what comes out of your mouth in faith, it has a powerful effect. Your own faith is strengthened in a personal way when you hear yourself agreeing with God. It is wonderful to hear someone else speak the promise, but there is something deeply powerful about your own voice declaring what God has said.
Many believers spend too much time saying what the sickness is doing and not enough time saying what God has promised. It is not wrong to acknowledge pain, describe symptoms to a doctor, or be honest about what is happening. But there is a difference between reporting the problem and rehearsing the problem. When we rehearse sickness over and over, we give it more attention than the promise.
It is easy to say what the medical report says, but the fight of faith says what God says in the face of every sickness. Faith does not deny the report, but faith refuses to let the report become the final authority. God’s Word must become the highest truth we hear, believe, and speak.
God is teaching us a better way. We pray and say the promise, not the problem. We say what God says until our hearts begin to hear Heaven louder than fear. We say what God says until our thoughts, emotions, and expectations begin to come into agreement with His Word.
By the way, the best time to develop faith for healing is before you get sick. We should not wait until the battle is raging to begin filling our ears with God’s promises. Just as people build physical strength before they face a demanding task, believers should build spiritual strength before the crisis comes. When the Word is already in your heart, it is easier for the promise to come out of your mouth when pressure begins to speak.
Faith comes by hearing, so we must give ourselves something faith-filled to hear. Read healing Scriptures out loud. Listen to the Word while you rest. Speak the promises over your body in the morning, before bed, and all throughout the day. Let worship, prayer, and the Word fill the atmosphere of your home, and do not allow the voice of sickness to be the loudest sound in your life.
I remember those long-distance drives to the medical facilities. One of my favorite songs to sing along with was Don Moen’s “I Am the God That Healeth Thee.” That song drove faith into our hearts, and it came boldly out of our mouths. And you know what? It came true because it is true. He is the God that heals you!
This does not mean we ignore wisdom, doctors, treatment, or healthy choices. It means we refuse to let natural information become the highest authority in our hearts. We can listen to medical instruction without letting fear dominate our thinking. We can follow practical steps while still filling our ears with the promises of God.
One of the greatest discoveries in the healing journey is realizing that faith has a sound. Fear has a sound, sickness has a sound, and faith has a sound. Faith sounds like the Word of God coming out of your mouth. Faith sounds like thanksgiving before the full manifestation, and faith sounds like a believer saying, “God is good, His Word is true, and His healing power is working in me.”
Today, choose what your ears will hear and what your mouth will echo. Refuse to let fear preach louder than the Father. Refuse to let sickness become your daily confession. Open your mouth, speak the promise, and let your own ears hear the sound of faith until the Word you keep hearing becomes the faith you keep carrying.
Prayer
Father, thank You that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by Your Word. Help me become more intentional about what I allow into my ears and into my heart. Teach me to hear Your promises more than I hear fear, symptoms, or discouraging reports. I choose to pray and say the promise instead of rehearsing the problem. Let Your Word strengthen my faith, renew my mind, and bring healing life to my body. I thank You in advance for the healing, restoration, strength, and wholeness You are working in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
