DAY 22 — The Pearl: Always Rejoicing
“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” — Philippians 4:4 (NKJV)
Principle to Live
The pearl of always rejoicing is discovering that my joy does not have to rise and fall with my circumstances because its Source is the Lord. I exchange complaining for gratitude, discouragement for hope, and dependence upon what is happening around me for joy flowing from Christ within me. I can’t loose for winning!
The Pearl of Always Rejoicing
Have you ever received news that changed the atmosphere of your entire day? One moment, you were hopeful, peaceful, and moving forward. The next, a phone call, a bill, a disappointment, or an unexpected problem seemed to drain the joy right out of you. Life can change quickly, but God never does.
That is why I often say, “I can’t lose for winning! Even when it looks like I’m losing, God has a way of turning it around until I win again.” Circumstances cannot steal my joy because my joy is in the Lord. His joy gives me strength, my faith in His plan keeps me moving forward, and I know He is working everything together for my good!
That does not mean everything that happens to me is good. It means I can trust God to work even the difficult things for my good. My circumstances may change, but my Source does not. Therefore, my circumstances do not get to determine my joy.
“Rejoice always” sounds wonderful until life gives us something we do not feel like rejoicing about. Bills arrive, plans change, people disappoint us, our bodies hurt, prayers seem unanswered, and circumstances do not always cooperate with our expectations. Yet Paul does not say, “Rejoice when everything is going well.” He says, “Rejoice in the Lord always.”
Those three words—“in the Lord”—are the key. Paul is not teaching us to rejoice in sickness, tragedy, loss, injustice, or pain. He is teaching us that even when circumstances give us no reason to rejoice, Jesus still does.
Paul was not writing from a life untouched by difficulty. He had experienced rejection, beatings, imprisonment, opposition, disappointment, and loss. His joy survived because its Source was greater than his circumstances.
This is the pearl of always rejoicing. If circumstances are the source of my joy, circumstances can take my joy away. If people are the source, people can take it away. If money, success, health, recognition, or answered prayer becomes the source, my joy will rise and fall with each of them. But when Jesus is my Source, my joy is anchored in Someone who does not change.
The exchanged life changes the question from, “Do I have anything to be happy about?” to “Do I still have Jesus?” Happiness often responds to what is happening, but the joy of the Lord flows from who lives within us. I do not have to manufacture joy; I can manifest the joy of Christ.
This becomes very practical when our mood begins to follow our circumstances. We can stop and deliberately turn our attention from what has changed to what has not changed. My Father still loves me, Jesus still lives within me, the Holy Spirit is still present, grace is still available, God is still faithful, and my future is still secure in Christ.
Rejoicing does not mean denying our emotions. We can grieve and still possess joy, experience disappointment and still trust God, or walk through difficulty while remaining aware of His goodness. Joy does not pretend the storm is absent; it remembers that Jesus is present in the storm.
Gratitude is one practical way we cooperate with this pearl. Complaining magnifies what is wrong, while thanksgiving redirects our attention toward what remains good. Sometimes the quickest way out of a cycle of discouragement is simply to begin thanking God for what has not changed.
What a beautiful exchange. I exchange complaining for gratitude, discouragement for hope, and circumstance-controlled emotions for Christ-centered joy. Instead of waiting for everything around me to improve before I rejoice, I draw from the joy already available in Him.
Perhaps the practical question for today is, “What have I allowed to determine my joy?” If the answer is money, another person, a problem, an unanswered prayer, or something that did not go according to plan, the Holy Spirit may be inviting us to make an exchange.
The pearl is not pretending everything is wonderful. The pearl of always rejoicing is knowing that even when everything around me is changing, the greatest reality within me has not changed. Jesus is still Lord, I am still loved, His Spirit still lives within me, and God is still working everything together for my good. Therefore, I still have a reason to rejoice!
Prayer of Faith
Precious Heavenly Father, thank You that my joy does not have to depend upon changing circumstances. When disappointment, difficulty, or discouragement comes, remind me that You have not changed, Your love for me remains secure, and You are working everything together for my good.
Holy Spirit, teach me to exchange complaining for gratitude and discouragement for hope. Instead of allowing circumstances to control my mood, help me draw from the joy of Christ living within me. Let Your joy become my strength.
I receive the pearl of always rejoicing. Whether I have much or little, whether the answer has come or I am still waiting, I choose to rejoice in the Lord because Jesus remains my unchanging Source.
I can’t lose for winning! Even when it looks like I am losing, I trust You to work it for my good. My circumstances cannot steal my joy because my joy is in the Lord!
I am loved by You, precious Heavenly Father, filled with Your Holy Spirit, and alive in You, my precious Savior, Jesus Christ. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
