DAY 15 — The Pearl: Confidence

Principle to Live
The pearl of true confidence is not believing more strongly in myself; it is becoming free from dependence upon myself. I exchange confidence in my ability, accomplishments, reputation, and religious performance for complete confidence in Christ and what He has accomplished for me.
The Pearl of Confidence
Where does your confidence come from? Is it found in what you have accomplished, how disciplined you are, what others think of you, your education, position, ministry, reputation, or ability to do the right thing?
Paul had an impressive résumé. He possessed the right heritage, religious credentials, discipline, zeal, and outward righteousness. If anyone could have placed confidence in human achievement, Paul could. Yet after encountering Christ, he came to a startling conclusion: everything he once considered gain had become loss compared with Jesus.
This is the pearl of true confidence. The exchanged life moves our confidence away from who we are apart from Christ and places it completely in who Christ is within us.
Paul calls this refusing to put “confidence in the flesh.” Flesh is more than sinful behavior; it also includes the human attempt to produce spiritual life through natural ability. We can even do good things from the wrong source. Discipline, knowledge, experience, and gifting are valuable, but they were never intended to become the foundation of our confidence.
Sometimes success can make self-reliance harder to recognize than failure. Failure quickly reveals our weakness, but success can convince us that our strength is sufficient. We may begin believing, “I have this figured out. I know what I am doing. I can handle this.”
The exchanged life invites us into something better. Instead of saying, “Look what I can do,” we begin saying, “Look what Christ can do through a surrendered life.” Our confidence shifts from ability to availability, from self-reliance to dependence, and from our record to His righteousness.
Paul had to release an identity built around achievement. The things that once made him feel superior became worthless as a basis for standing before God. His identity was no longer “Paul the accomplished Pharisee.” His life was now hidden in Christ.
We face the same exchange. We can build identity around success, money, titles, education, ministry, influence, morality, or even how long we have followed Jesus. None of those things can carry the weight of becoming our source of worth or confidence.
True confidence does not mean becoming insecure or doubting the gifts God has placed within us. It means knowing that every gift, ability, opportunity, and accomplishment flows from grace. I can walk confidently without becoming self-confident because my confidence is rooted in Christ.
This changes how we handle both success and failure. Success does not have to produce pride because Christ is my Source. Failure does not have to destroy me because my identity was never built upon perfect performance.
What a beautiful exchange. I exchange self-confidence for Christ-confidence, performance for grace, reputation for identity in Him, and the pressure to prove myself for the freedom of depending upon Jesus.
To possess this pearl, I must release the belief that my strength, goodness, experience, or accomplishments make me secure. Paul willingly laid those things down because he discovered something infinitely greater.
The pearl is not merely learning to think less of our accomplishments. The pearl of true confidence is discovering that Christ Himself is enough. My confidence is no longer in what I can accomplish for Him but in what He has accomplished for me and what He desires to accomplish through me.
Maybe the most freeing confession we can make is this: “Father, apart from You I can do nothing, but through Christ living in me, I have everything I need.”
That is the great exchange. I release confidence in the flesh and receive confidence in Christ. I no longer have to prove that I am enough because Jesus has become my sufficiency.
Prayer of Faith
Precious Heavenly Father, thank You that my confidence does not have to rest in my performance, accomplishments, ability, or reputation. I surrender every place where I have depended upon myself instead of depending upon You.
Holy Spirit, reveal any hidden confidence in the flesh and teach me to live from Christ as my Source. Let success produce gratitude rather than pride, and let failure never define my identity.
I receive the pearl of true confidence. I exchange self-reliance for dependence, performance for grace, and confidence in myself for complete confidence in Christ.
I am loved by You, precious Heavenly Father, filled with Your Holy Spirit, and alive in You, my precious Savior, Jesus Christ. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
