DAY 13 — The Pearl: Indwelling God
“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” — Philippians 2:12–13 (NKJV)
Promise to Believe
The pearl of God working within me is the promise that I am not left to produce the Christian life through my own strength. God is already at work within me, creating both the desire and the ability to accomplish His purpose. I exchange self-effort for surrender, independence for dependence, and my limited ability for His divine activity within me.
The Pearl of Indwelling God
Have you ever read “work out your own salvation” and immediately felt pressure to try harder, do better, and become more spiritual? If we stop at verse 12, that might be our conclusion. But verse 13 reveals the pearl: “for it is God who works in you.”
We work out what God is working in. Paul does not say we work for our salvation. Salvation is the gift of God received by grace through faith. Rather, what God works inwardly, we allow to be expressed outwardly.
This is the exchanged life. Christianity is not God giving us instructions and then standing back to see whether we can accomplish them. The Father has placed His Spirit within us, and Christ has become our life. God Himself is working from the inside out.
Paul says God works in us “both to will and to do.” He changes not only our actions but also our desires. When our desires do not agree with His, we can surrender them and pray, “Father, work in me to want what You want.”
What a beautiful exchange. I exchange “I have to make myself change” for “God is working within me.” I exchange willpower for His power, striving for surrender, and the pressure to produce spiritual life for dependence upon the One who already lives within me.
This does not make us passive. We cooperate with the Holy Spirit, respond to His voice, renew our minds with truth, and obey His leading. Our obedience flows from His activity within us rather than an attempt to produce His life without Him.
Jesus modeled this dependence perfectly. He said, “I can of Myself do nothing.” — John 5:30 (NKJV) If Jesus chose to live in dependence upon His Father through the Holy Spirit, why would we believe we can live the Christian life independently?
Sometimes our greatest obstacle is not weakness but self-sufficiency. If we believe we are successfully living the Christian life simply because we are disciplined enough to keep rules, follow the law, and exercise strong willpower, we may actually be blinded by pride. Human discipline can modify behavior, but only Christ can produce His life within us.
Maybe we should quit “trying harder” and start “trusting and depending more.”
Consider love. We often tell ourselves, “I need to be more loving,” as though we are the source of the love we are trying to produce. Then we strain to manufacture something only God can supply. But the exchanged life changes the source.
We do not need to manufacture the love of God; we need to manifest the love of God. His love has already been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Instead of saying, “I need to make myself love this person,” I can pray, “Holy Spirit, manifest the love of Jesus through me toward them.”
This is a key to understanding the real Christian life. The same is true of joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, and every expression of Christlike character. I am not the factory trying to manufacture the life of Jesus; I am the vessel through whom His life is meant to be manifested.
The pearl of God working within you means you are never facing transformation alone. When He reveals an area that needs to change, His revelation is also an invitation to receive His grace. The God who points to the unfinished place is the same God who promises to work within it.
To possess this pearl, I must release the illusion of independence. I surrender self-effort, pride, the pressure to transform myself, and the condemnation that comes when my strength fails.
The pearl is not merely that God helps me when I cannot do enough. The pearl of God working within me is that He has become the Source of the life He calls me to live. His desire becomes my desire, His strength my strength, His love flows through me, and His life becomes increasingly visible through mine.
What a beautiful exchange. I quit trying harder and begin trusting and depending more. I stop manufacturing and start manifesting. I work out what He is working in.
Prayer of Faith
Precious Heavenly Father, thank You that I am not left to live the Christian life in my own strength. You are working within me both to desire and to accomplish Your good pleasure.
I surrender self-effort, independence, pride, and the pressure to change myself. Holy Spirit, teach me to quit trying harder and start trusting and depending more. Let me stop manufacturing what only You can produce and begin manifesting the love, joy, peace, and life of Jesus within me.
I receive the pearl of God working within me. I exchange striving for surrender, self-reliance for dependence, and my limited ability for Your divine activity within me.
I am loved by You, precious Heavenly Father, filled with Your Holy Spirit, and alive in You, my precious Savior, Jesus Christ. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
