DAY 1 — The Pearl: His Life Through Me
“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 1:6 (NKJV)
Promise to Believe
God is not finished with me. The life He began in me through Christ is still being formed, revealed, and expressed. As I yield to Him, Jesus will increasingly live His life through me.
The Pearl of His Life Through Me
One of the first pearls we uncover in Philippians is a promise of enormous hope: God finishes what He starts. Paul said he was “confident” that the One who began a good work in us would complete it. His confidence was not in the strength, discipline, determination, or perfection of the Philippian believers. His confidence was in God, and that distinction changes everything.
Many believers spend years trying to perfect themselves. We try harder, promise to do better, become frustrated with our weaknesses, and sometimes even condemn ourselves when we fail. But the Christian life was never intended to be the improvement of our old life through greater human effort. It is the unfolding of a completely new life—the life of Christ within us.
The pearl is not simply, “God is working on me.” The pearl is this: Christ is living in me, and God is faithfully bringing His life to expression through me. Paul would later describe this mystery with these words: “For to me, to live is Christ.” — Philippians 1:21 (NKJV) He also wrote, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)
This is the exchanged life. We exchange self-effort for surrender, self-reliance for dependence, our limited strength for His unlimited grace, and the exhausting attempt to live for Jesus for the beautiful privilege of allowing Jesus to live through us. That does not mean we become passive. Surrender is one of the most active choices we will ever make because every day we choose whether we will live from our own strength or yield ourselves to the life of Christ within us.
Jesus Himself modeled this life of dependence. He said, “The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do.” — John 5:19 (NKJV) If Jesus lived in complete dependence upon His Father, why would we imagine that we could live the Christian life independently of Him?
God’s work within you is much deeper than behavior modification. He is transforming the way you think, love, respond, forgive, serve, believe, and see. His desire is not merely that you act more like Jesus. His desire is that the Jesus who already lives within you becomes increasingly visible through you.
That is why you should never become discouraged when you recognize an area of your life that still needs transformation. Awareness is not evidence that God has abandoned His work. Sometimes it is evidence that the Holy Spirit is revealing where He desires to bring greater freedom. You are still becoming, still yielding, and He is still working.
To possess this pearl, something lesser must be released. We must release the pressure to perfect ourselves, condemnation over unfinished areas of our lives, and the belief that everything depends upon our strength. The One who started the work is the One who promised to finish it.
Think about the way a pearl is formed. Layer after layer is added until something beautiful emerges from what once appeared to be only irritation. In the same way, God is continually working within us—grace upon grace, revelation upon revelation, surrender upon surrender—until the beauty of Christ becomes increasingly visible.
You may look at yourself today and see unfinished places, but your Heavenly Father sees what He started, what He is forming, and what He will complete. Do not become so focused on what is unfinished that you fail to recognize the Pearl already within you. Christ is in you, and His life is being revealed through you.
Today, stop asking only, “How can I become a better Christian?” Begin asking a different question: “Jesus, how do You want to live through me today?” That is the pearl—not merely my life improved, but His life through me.
Prayer of Faith
Precious Heavenly Father, thank You that You began a good work within me and that You are faithful to complete what You started. My confidence is not in my ability to perfect myself; my confidence is in Your faithfulness and the life of Jesus within me.
Today I release self-effort, self-reliance, condemnation, and the pressure to change myself through my own strength. I surrender every unfinished area of my life to You and trust Your Holy Spirit to continue transforming me from within.
Jesus, live Your life through me. Let Your love flow through my heart, Your grace through my words, Your compassion through my actions, Your faith through my believing, and Your character through my responses.
Father, when I see weakness, remind me that You are still working. When I see areas that need transformation, remind me that You have not abandoned Your work. Let me recognize the precious Pearl You have already placed within me—Christ in me, becoming increasingly visible through me.
Today I receive the promise that You will complete what You began. I yield my life again to You and declare that my Christian life will not be built upon my strength, but upon the life of Jesus flowing through me.
I am loved by You, precious Heavenly Father, filled with Your Holy Spirit, and alive in You, my precious Savior, Jesus Christ. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
