DAY 30 — The Pearl: Made to Shine

“Among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life.” — Philippians 2:15–16 (NKJV)

Principle to Live

The pearl God is forming in me was never meant to remain hidden. As I yield to the Holy Spirit, the life of Jesus within me becomes visible to the people around me.

Made to Shine

There is something beautiful about a pearl when light touches it. It does not create the light. It simply reflects what is shining upon it.

Maybe that is one of the simplest pictures of what our lives with Jesus are supposed to look like.

We spend so much time trying to become better Christians. We try to be more loving, more patient, more joyful, more peaceful, and more spiritual. And before long, even the Christian life can begin to feel exhausting.

But what if we were never meant to manufacture any of it?

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Then He looked at His followers and said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).

I love that.

He is the Light, and somehow He chooses to shine through us.

That means I do not have to wake up every morning trying to manufacture Jesus. He already lives within me. My part is to surrender—to get myself out of the way and allow the Holy Spirit to express His life through mine.

And usually, that happens in very ordinary moments.

It happens when someone says something that hurts me and I have the opportunity to respond with grace instead of reacting in anger. It happens when I notice someone who is hurting and take the time to listen. It happens when I forgive someone who may never apologize, give when nobody is watching, encourage someone who feels forgotten, or simply treat people with kindness.

Those moments may not feel very spiritual, but perhaps they are some of the most spiritual moments of our lives.

People are watching how we live.

They watch how we treat our families. They watch how we conduct ourselves in business. They watch how we respond when things do not go our way. They watch what happens when we are disappointed, criticized, overlooked, or offended.

And somewhere in those ordinary moments, they can catch a glimpse of Jesus.

That challenges me.

I do not want people simply to know that I preach about Jesus. I want them to experience something of Jesus when they are around me. I want my family to experience His love through me. I want people who work with me to experience His kindness through me. I even want people who disagree with me to encounter His grace through the way I treat them.

I will not always get it right. None of us will.

After all, I am still a pearl in progress.

But maybe that is part of the beauty. God does not wait until we are perfect before He begins shining through us. He takes imperfect people who are willing to surrender and allows something beautiful about Jesus to become visible through their lives.

The world can be a dark place. We can spend our lives talking about how dark it has become, complaining about what is wrong, and wishing everyone else would change.

Or we can shine.

Maybe the answer to darkness is simpler than we have made it.

Love somebody.

Forgive somebody.

Encourage somebody.

Serve somebody.

Give generously.

Speak life.

Be kind.

Let Jesus be seen.

That is what I want my life to become.

Not a life that merely talks about Jesus, but a life through which people can actually encounter Him.

So here is the question I want to carry with me today:

“Jesus, what would it look like for You to shine through me right here?”

Right here in my home. Right here in my workplace. Right here in this conversation. Right here with this difficult person. Right here in this unexpected problem.

I do not have to manufacture the Light.

The Light already lives within me.

I simply need to let Him shine.

Prayer of Faith

Precious Heavenly Father, thank You for placing the life of Jesus within me. More than anything, I want the people around me to encounter something of Him through the way I live and love.

Holy Spirit, help me recognize the ordinary moments when Jesus wants to shine through me. When I am tempted to react, help me surrender. When someone needs love, kindness, forgiveness, encouragement, or grace, let the life of Christ within me become visible.

I know I am still a pearl in progress, but I am grateful that You do not wait until I am perfect before You use me. Keep forming me, keep changing me, and keep shining through me.

Jesus, let people see You in me.

I am loved by You, precious Heavenly Father, filled with Your Holy Spirit, and alive in You, my precious Savior, Jesus Christ. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
