DAY 9: THE WHISPER
“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said…?’” Genesis 3:1 NKJV
“The enemy does not need you to believe a great lie all at once. He only needs you to entertain a small whisper long enough for it to become an imagination.” — Dr. Daniel LeBlanc
THE WHISPER
The enemy does not always begin with something obvious. Often he begins with a whisper, a suggestion, or a question that seems small enough to entertain. That is exactly what happened in the Garden when the serpent asked Eve, “Has God indeed said…?” Notice the strategy. Satan did not begin by telling Eve to rebel against God. He began by questioning what God had said. The whisper was designed to create doubt, and the doubt opened the door for another picture to form. This is why we must learn to discern the whisper before it becomes a picture. The enemy may whisper, “What if God doesn’t come through?” “What if you never recover?” “What if they reject you?” “Nobody will ever know.” “You deserve this.” “Maybe God did not really mean what He said.” The whisper may seem small, but if we continually entertain it, something begins happening within our imagination. We begin seeing what the whisper is saying.
This is how fear often grows. A thought says, “What if something happens?” and suddenly your imagination begins producing pictures of everything that could go wrong. Nothing has actually happened, but internally you have already begun experiencing a future painted by fear.
Temptation can work the same way. James wrote, “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.” James 1:14 NKJV. The enemy understands that he does not have to force us into sin. He only needs to present something that we are willing to entertain until desire and imagination begin moving in the same direction. This is why we must not confuse a whisper with our own identity. Just because a thought entered your mind does not mean it belongs to you. You don’t have to follow your emotions all the time. Feelings can lie. If one always gives into the urges of the body that person will certainly be n bandage. You can hear a lie without believing it, experience temptation without yielding to it, and recognize fear without allowing it to paint your future. Jesus showed us how to respond. When Satan tempted Him in the wilderness, Jesus repeatedly answered, “It is written.” Matthew 4:4 NKJV. Jesus did not debate the enemy’s suggestions or allow them to develop into an inner picture. He answered the whisper with the Word.
There is tremendous power in learning to stop the process early. Instead of allowing a whisper to become a thought you continually entertain, a picture you continually behold, and eventually an agreement you begin living from, confront it with truth.
Whisper → Thought → Picture → Agreement → Expectation → Action
But through Christ, we can interrupt that progression:
Whisper → Discernment → Truth → God Imagination → Faith → Obedience
The enemy may whisper, but he does not hold the brush. You decide whether his whisper will be given permission to paint upon the canvas of your heart. Spiritual maturity means we are becoming increasingly sensitive to these whispers. The more we walk with the Holy Spirit and fill our hearts with the Word, the sooner we recognize something that does not sound like our King. We do not have to fear the whisper because we know the voice of the Shepherd. Today, pay attention to the small thoughts you normally allow to pass unchallenged. When one contradicts God’s Word, stop it before it becomes a picture. Answer the whisper with truth and give the brush back to God.
Prayer
Father, sharpen my spiritual discernment so I recognize every whisper that contradicts Your Word. Holy Spirit, teach me to recognize the voice of my Shepherd and quickly reject every lie, temptation, accusation, and fear. I choose Your truth before the whisper becomes a picture, and I give You permission to paint Your thoughts upon my imagination. Amen.
Today’s God Imagination
The enemy may whisper, but he does not hold the brush. I do not have to entertain every suggestion that enters my mind. I recognize the voice of my Shepherd, answer lies with the Word of God, and choose truth before the whisper becomes a picture. My imagination belongs to God.
