Day 20: A Tenderhearted Love That Lives in Pre-forgiveness
“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
—Ephesians 4:32 NKJV
“Pre-forgiveness keeps the heart tender enough for God’s love to keep flowing.”

A Tenderhearted Love That Lives in Pre-forgiveness
A heart that lives in pre-forgiveness reflects the nature of Jesus Christ. It is a heart being transformed by the Holy Spirit—a heart that chooses kindness, compassion, and grace before offense has an opportunity to harden it.
Ephesians 4:32 connects three powerful qualities: kindness, tenderheartedness, and forgiveness. These qualities work together. Kindness shapes the way we treat others, compassion helps us recognize their needs, and forgiveness keeps our hearts free when they disappoint us.
A tender heart is not a weak heart. It is a heart that remains sensitive to God while refusing to become hardened by people.
Life will present many opportunities to become defensive, suspicious, impatient, or emotionally distant. Pain may tempt us to build walls around our hearts so that no one can reach us again. Although those walls may appear protective, they can also prevent love, intimacy, healing, and compassion from flowing freely.
Pre-forgiveness allows us to guard our hearts without hardening them.
It prepares us to release offense quickly so that disappointment does not reshape our character. Rather than allowing another person’s behavior to make us cold, harsh, or resentful, we invite the Holy Spirit to keep our hearts tender and our responses gracious.
God prepared and provided forgiveness for us through Jesus Christ before we ever recognized our need for mercy. When we repented and believed, we received what His grace had already made available.
Because we have received such abundant mercy, we can allow that mercy to flow through us toward others. We do not extend grace because everyone deserves our approval. We extend grace because we desire to reflect the character of the One who has forgiven us.
Pre-forgiveness is not merely an emotional feeling. Emotions may change from one moment to the next. Pre-forgiveness is a settled decision of the heart, empowered by the Holy Spirit, that chooses grace before bitterness has an opportunity to grow.
It declares, “I will remain tenderhearted even when others are careless. I will remain compassionate even when people disappoint me. I will not allow someone else’s actions to stop the love of God from flowing through my life.”
Tenderheartedness does not require us to ignore wrongdoing, tolerate mistreatment, or remain in unhealthy situations. We can be compassionate while establishing boundaries. We can forgive while requiring accountability. We can speak truth while maintaining kindness.
A tender heart is not a heart without wisdom. It is a heart in which wisdom is guided by love rather than bitterness.
The Holy Spirit teaches us to look beyond the immediate offense and recognize the humanity of the person before us. Everyone carries struggles, insecurities, disappointments, and unseen wounds. This understanding does not excuse harmful behavior, but it can help us respond with mercy rather than condemnation.
Sometimes the person who speaks harshly is carrying private pain. The person who appears distant may be afraid of rejection. The person who becomes defensive may have spent years feeling misunderstood.
We may not know the complete reason for another person’s behavior, but we can choose not to answer brokenness with more brokenness.
Pre-forgiveness interrupts the cycle. It replaces harshness with gentleness, retaliation with mercy, and emotional distance with Spirit-led compassion.
This tenderhearted love is active. It is revealed through patient words, thoughtful actions, attentive listening, and the willingness to offer grace in ordinary moments. It appears when we resist the urge to criticize, choose not to repeat another person’s failure, and respond calmly when we could have reacted sharply.
Every interaction becomes an opportunity to reveal the heart of Christ.
A tenderhearted person does not search continually for reasons to be offended. Instead, that person looks for opportunities to encourage, understand, serve, and restore.
This does not mean we will respond perfectly every time. We are still growing. There may be moments when our tone becomes harsh, our patience wears thin, or an offense begins settling into our hearts.
When that happens, the Holy Spirit gently calls us back to tenderness. He reminds us of the grace we have received and empowers us to begin again.
Your challenge today is to examine the condition of your heart. Has disappointment made you emotionally distant? Has repeated offense caused you to become harsh or suspicious? Have you protected yourself so completely that compassion can no longer flow freely?
Ask the Holy Spirit to soften every hardened place.
Then consider one person who needs to experience the kindness of God through you today. It may be someone who has disappointed you, someone who feels overlooked, or someone whose behavior has tested your patience.
Offer a kind word. Listen without interrupting. Respond with gentleness. Extend grace where you might normally assign blame.
Pre-forgiveness keeps the heart tender, and a tender heart becomes a living expression of the love of Jesus.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the kindness, compassion, and forgiveness You have freely extended to me through Jesus Christ.
Holy Spirit, keep my heart tender and sensitive to Your presence. Reveal every place where disappointment, pain, or repeated offense has caused me to become hardened, defensive, impatient, or emotionally distant.
I surrender every hurt and every resentment into Your hands. Remove harshness from my words, judgment from my thoughts, and bitterness from my heart.
Empower me to live daily in pre-forgiveness. Prepare me to respond with grace before offense has an opportunity to take root. Help me remain kind when others are careless, compassionate when they are struggling, and tenderhearted when I am disappointed.
Give me wisdom to establish healthy boundaries without becoming cold. Teach me to speak truth without cruelty, pursue accountability without resentment, and protect what is important without closing my heart to love.
Bring to my mind someone who needs to experience Your kindness through me today. Show me a practical way to encourage, serve, listen to, or extend grace to that person.
Let my words and actions reveal the heart of Christ. May my life become a testimony of Your healing, mercy, redemption, and unfailing love.
Keep Your love flowing freely through me, and make my heart increasingly tender toward You and toward others.
In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
